Partner of SUBSTANCE design consortium, Barbara has over 25 years of architectural experience.
A graduate of the University of Texas in Austin, Barbara studied sustainable solutions with Pliny
Fisk at the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems before
sustainable design was cool. She received her Master of Science in Building Design from ASU
concentrating in energy performance and climate responsive architecture. She was the recipient
of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium King Student Medal for excellence in architectural
and environmental design research. She Co-owned Duvall/Hendricks Inc., an architecture and interior
design firm ranked 24th in "Largest Architectural Firms in the Baltimore Area" by Baltimore Business
Journal, 1994 and ranked in top 200 interior design firms in the U.S. by Interior Design Magazine
1992, 1993 and 1994. Projects included commercial office, retail and medical design, historic
renovation, adaptive reuse and facility management ranging from 1,500 square feet to 1,000,000
square feet with project budgets up to $9 million. As the architect of record of the Biodesign
Institute at ASU, a $140M, 350,000 SF, fast track, CM@R project of 2 research laboratory buildings
as part of a 4-building masterplan, Barbara lead a large and complex consultant team from programming
and master planning through construction administration. The Biodesign Institute Building B is
recognized as the first LEED platinum certified building in the state of Arizona. Building A is a
LEED gold building. Barbara brings this expertise and passion for innovative sustainable solutions
to SUBSTANCE design consortium.
